Socoa is the part of Ciboure on the south side of the Saint-Jean-de-Luz bay, with its harbour and its fort. When a big north-westerly swell rolls in, its reef lights up below the beacon surfers call “la bougie” (the candle), with La Rhune as a backdrop.

Surfing in Socoa: your questions answered
Can you see the Belharra wave from Socoa?
Yes, when it breaks: Belharra is a reef about 2.5 km offshore, between Socoa and Hendaye, that only wakes up in very big winter swells, and not at all in some winters. The wave then tops 8 m and is strictly for big-wave specialists; you can watch it from the Route de la Corniche, between Socoa and Hendaye.
Where can you surf near Socoa when La bougie isn’t working?
Across the bay, at the northern end of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Sainte-Barbe is a long right-hander peeling along the groyne, on a westerly swell from mid to high tide. Lafitenia, a few kilometres away, is a more consistent reef and point break.
