Its bay may be sheltered from the waves, but Saint-Jean-de-Luz keeps its surf spots to the north, along the coast road: the long Lafitenia right, the wild Cenitz cove, Erromardie beach and, on the bay’s headland, Sainte-Barbe, which wakes up when a big swell maxes out the rest of the coast.

Surfing in Saint-Jean-de-Luz: your questions answered

Which Saint-Jean-de-Luz spot works when the swell is big?

Sainte-Barbe, at the northern tip of the bay: this reef keeps working even at 3 to 4 m, when the neighbouring beaches are maxed out. It’s a spot for experienced surfers.

Where can I learn to surf in Saint-Jean-de-Luz?

Avoid Lafitenia and Sainte-Barbe, which are for experienced surfers. When you’re starting out, go for the long, gentle left in the south of Cenitz bay, or the Les Flots Bleus peak next to Sainte-Barbe, as long as the swell stays under 2 m.

Which Saint-Jean-de-Luz spot works at high tide?

Cenitz, one of the few local spots that works at high tide, or the Sainte-Barbe right along the harbour wall, which needs a steady swell and high tide. Lafitenia and Erromardie are better from low to mid tide.
