Surfing in Hendaye: your questions answered
Where should I learn to surf in Hendaye?
In the middle of the main beach: it’s very flat, which slows the swell down, and the waves are on average half the size of Biarritz’s. Most surf schools are grouped around the Casino. Save Les 2 jumeaux, at the end of the beach, for when you’re more confident: there’s rock under the water.
Where can I surf in Hendaye when the swell is big?
The bay of Hendaye faces north-west and is sheltered, so it’s the go-to fallback when the swell is too big elsewhere: on big days, head for the sides of the beach. The flip side is that in winter everyone has the same idea and the line-up fills up.
What’s the best season to surf in Hendaye?
Spring and autumn: consistent waves and fewer people than in summer. Summer is still ideal for beginners, but the swell is at its lowest and some days are flat. Winter brings the strongest swell, but the water drops to around 10 °C: bring a 4/3 and boots.
