More about Les Cavaliers

Les Cavaliers is the big beach at the north end of Anglet: plenty of space, sand as far as the eye can see and waves that change from one day to the next with the swell and the tide. Between the groynes, the sandbanks throw up hollow, fast peaks – the ones that made the spot’s name and regularly host contests.

Our photographers shoot there whenever conditions line up. Find your session by day and time, scroll through the photos and download yours in HD.

Les Cavaliers: your questions answered

What tide is best for surfing Les Cavaliers?

Aim for mid tide: at low tide the outside banks throw up steeper, faster waves, and at high tide the shore break soon turns nasty. The banks shift a lot, so the sweet spot can change from one week to the next.

What level do you need for Les Cavaliers?

It’s not a beginner spot: the waves are powerful, often hollow, with close-outs and a strong current. It suits confident intermediates and advanced surfers, and it gets crowded as soon as it’s working, so mind the priority rules.

Why are the waves bigger at Les Cavaliers?

It’s down to a large underwater trench offshore: the waves are often bigger here than on the other Anglet beaches. That’s also why the spot holds swell well and hosts competitions.

How do I paddle out to the peak at Les Cavaliers?

Paddle out along the groyne: the current running beside the jetty helps you back to the peak, which is easy to reach via the channel by the jetty. That current is powerful, so only use it if you’re confident.

What conditions make Les Cavaliers work?

A west to north-west swell with an offshore easterly wind gives the best sessions. The sandbanks change a lot: some days the peak is perfect, other days it just closes out.
