A former fishing village, Guéthary is the home of reefs and big waves on the Basque coast. From its little harbour you paddle out to the big Parlementia right, the fast Les Alcyons wave and, on the biggest days, to Avalanche, the heaviest wave around. Winter, from December to March, is the prime season.

Surfing in Guéthary: your questions answered

Where can beginners surf in Guéthary?

At Cenitz: it’s the only spot in Guéthary that’s really suited to learning, with a gentle left at the south end of the bay, ideal for longboarding, and a faster, hollower right to the north. Parlementia, Les Alcyons and Avalanche are reefs for seasoned surfers.

When is the best time to surf in Guéthary?

The main season runs from December to March, when the big swells come one after another and the reefs light up; Parlementia is often already firing in autumn, especially in October. Summer is calmer and better suited to learning at Cenitz.

Which Guéthary spot should I pick for the size of the swell?

Les Alcyons and Parlementia start working at around a metre and a half, and Parlementia holds up to roughly six metres. Avalanche only wakes up above two and a half metres and is at its best between four and six metres.
