La Madrague: your questions answered
What tide is best for surfing La Madrague?
Low to mid tide: that’s when you get smooth, fast walls, whereas at high tide the wave can almost fade away. A medium swell is enough to get it going.
Why do the waves change so much at La Madrague?
The sandbanks keep shifting around the two jetties, moved by the currents: a good week can be followed by a bad one. Check it in person before paddling out, and watch out for the currents near the jetties.
Is La Madrague lifeguarded?
Partly: the beach has two zones, and only the right-hand one is lifeguarded in season, with the lifeguard station by the car park. The left-hand part, nicknamed La Petite Madrague, isn’t.
