In Bidart, the beaches nestle below the cliffs: Pavillon Royal and its reefs up north, the wilder Les 100 marches and Erretegia, the village beach below the centre and the big Uhabia beach to the south. A mix of spots, often quieter than Biarritz, just minutes from one another.

Surfing in Bidart: your questions answered

Where can beginners surf in Bidart?

Erretegia is Bidart’s gentlest beach: mellow waves, sheltered from southerly and westerly winds, where the surf schools take their students. The southern end of Pavillon Royal and, for much of the summer, L'Uhabia suit beginners too; steer clear of the reef at the northern end of Pavillon Royal, though.

Where should I surf in Bidart when the swell is big?

Bidart Centre is reputed to be the only beach in Bidart that holds a big swell without closing out, and L'Uhabia is a common fallback when it’s too big elsewhere (its northern end closes out quickly, mind). Pavillon Royal, on the other hand, falls apart once the swell goes much above two metres.

What’s the best season to surf in Bidart?

Autumn, when the west to north-west swells roll in, with mornings often offshore in an easterly wind; May–June and September to November give the best balance of swell, still-decent water and crowds. In summer the waves are small and the spots packed, so go early morning or late in the day; in winter the big swells are for experienced surfers.
