La baie d'Hendaye: your questions answered

Why is the bay of Hendaye ideal for beginners?

The beach is very flat with a sandy bottom: the swell arrives slowed down and the waves are on average half the size of Biarritz’s. It’s also sheltered from the wind and big swells, so conditions stay gentle even when the rest of the coast gets rough.

What conditions work best in the bay of Hendaye?

The best conditions combine a north-westerly swell with a south-easterly wind. The downside of all that shelter: the bay doesn’t work when the swell is too small, below about 1 m with a 6 to 7 second period.

Where are the best waves on Hendaye beach?

The waves break best in the middle of the bay, around the Casino, with a reliable left-and-right peak. The peak by the harbour wall (La Digue) is often less crowded than the Casino and offers easy waves.

What tide is best for the bay of Hendaye?

Mid tide is the one to aim for, especially at the Casino peak; by the harbour wall, high tide works better. Be careful at low tide, especially towards the west of the beach, where the bottom is half rock.

Does the bay of Hendaye get crowded?

In summer, surf schools fill the line-up, especially in the morning and afternoon, and July and August are the busiest months. In winter, the bay also draws a crowd on days when the rest of the coast is blown out.
