Dead flat. No sessions here.

Either nobody shot this slot, or you’ve got the wrong spot. Happens to the best of us.

Surfing landed in Europe in Biarritz, at the Côte des Basques, in 1957. The town has lived by the waves ever since: the Grande Plage and Le Miramar below the casino and the lighthouse, the Côte des Basques and its longboarders, then Marbella, the Milady and the Ilbaritz reefs heading south.

On Fraamed, every session shot in Biarritz is sorted by spot, day and time. Find yours, add your photos to the cart and download them in HD.

Surfing in Biarritz: your questions answered

Which Biarritz spot is best for learning to surf?

La Côte des Basques is the go-to spot for learning: its long, gentle waves are easy at low tide, and plenty of surf schools teach there. La Milady is another good option for beginners at low tide, with mid tide better suited to more experienced surfers. Just avoid La Côte des Basques at high tide, when the beach disappears.

Where can you surf in Biarritz when the swell is big?

When it’s big, look to the town centre: La Grande Plage stays surfable in stormy conditions, especially around mid tide, and at Le Miramar the rocks break up the swell, which makes it a classic fallback. La Côte des Basques, on the other hand, can get downright dangerous in a big swell, with the sea washing over the rocks.

What swell and wind do you need to surf in Biarritz?

The Biarritz spots mostly work on a west to north-west swell. The ideal wind is an easterly, offshore at most of the town-centre beaches; further south, Ilbaritz prefers a south-easterly.
