La Barre: your questions answered

Why is La Barre the fallback spot when the swell is big?

Wedged between the jetties at the mouth of the Adour, La Barre stays cleaner and smaller than the neighbouring beaches when everywhere else is maxed out. It’s no easy ride, though: the current is strong and it takes the kind of commitment only good surfers have.

What tide is best for surfing La Barre?

From low to mid tide, or on the turn: at high tide the spot doesn’t work. Keep an eye on the currents near the river mouth too.

Is the water clean at La Barre?

That’s the spot’s weak point: the Adour flows out right next to it, and surf guides flag poorer water quality. Have a shower when you get out.

Why is La Barre a legendary spot?

Back in the 1960s, La Barre was a benchmark wave and a rite of passage for future pros. The jetties later built on the Adour tamed the wave, which is now mainly a fallback spot.
