Ilbaritz: your questions answered

Where is the Ilbaritz surf spot?

Ilbaritz is in the commune of Bidart, just past La Milady as you head south from Biarritz, behind the golf course and below the Château d’Ilbarritz, which overlooks the beach. It’s the first beach before the centre of Bidart.

What conditions do you need to surf at Ilbaritz?

The spot likes a west-north-westerly swell with an offshore south-easterly wind. Its reefs throw up both lefts and rights, but the waves are unreliable: it doesn’t work every day.

What are the hazards at Ilbaritz?

The rocks, both in the line-up and at the southern end of the beach. The spot works best from low to mid tide, so get a good look at where the rocks are before you paddle out.
