VVF: your questions answered

What are the hazards at VVF?

Watch out for the rock slab on the right-hand side of the beach, near the first jetty: at high tide you can’t see it. There’s also a rip channel at the foot of the cliff; and if nobody is surfing a particular spot, follow their lead.

What tide is best for surfing VVF?

Mid tide down towards low: the peaks at the northern end work poorly at high tide, and high tide is also when the slab disappears from view.

Where are the peaks at VVF?

There are three peaks: a bigger but less reliable left by the cliff, then one in the middle and one on the right. The right is fairly hollow and is surfed on a longboard out the back and a shortboard on the inside.

Does VVF handle a big swell?

Yes, that’s one of its strengths: sheltered by the lighthouse headland, it stays surfable as the swell builds, with waves often smaller than in the north of Anglet. As long as the swell holds, it keeps working.
